Chapter Fourteen

Finley

What the fuck just happened?

Finley’s chest caved as his heart sank to his feet.

He thought they had something special. That he and Kage had developed more than a working friendship with fucking on the side. Kage’s gentle touches and the absolute adoration in his gaze when they came together face to face was impossible to fake. Kage had looked at him like he was the most beautiful person in the world, worth cherishing. And not a complete fuckup.

I’m such an idiot.

Finley had fallen for the mesmerising eyes and magic hands of a Dom. Sexual awakening had hit him hard and knocked him face down into the mud.

It couldn’t have been all fake. Fuck. The sinking feeling in him turned into a buzz in his muscles.

He wasn’t a violent man, but fucking hell, he could smash something right now. Back on the island, he would stomp around the distillery and help the guys roll barrels to get rid of the negative energy in him. After Max’s death, he would spend nights working, then sleep at the office on site—his body exhausted, his mind clear. Kage had given him much more than his own hand on his cock and a day of physical labour.

And now he was leaving him, pulling on his boots and reaching for his shirt.

“Where are you going?” Finley seethed inside but kept his composure.

“We’re done here. The door will lock itself when you leave.” Kage was looking everywhere but at him. Coward.

“So it’s only a job to you, and there’s no place for emotion. I see that now. I’m a Toy and you finished playing with me.” Finley grasped for a reaction from Kage. He sat at the edge of the bed, still naked, his flaccid cock between his legs, his chest still sticky with Kage’s come.

With a heavy sigh, Kage sank into the armchair opposite. “Yes, and no. It is my job but I love doing it.” Why was he so fucking calm? “And plenty of emotions are a crucial part of it. I’m proud of the Sub and how well they’re doing during a scene. I’m happy with the progress, and satisfied with the outcome. And absolutely elated with a floating Sub, whether they leave with a smile on their face or tears streaking down their cheeks.” He reached out, but then wiped his palms on his leathers instead.

Good. Finley didn’t want to be touched right now.

“That’s not what I meant, and you know it.” Finley spoke through gritted teeth, keeping himself together by a thread.

“But that’s what you wanted. I promised a scene, and this was a spontaneous one. Don’t read into it.”

Think rationally, Finley. Don’t be an idiot.

He took a deep breath, but it didn’t calm him down. Instead, tangled knots of raw emotion hurt him from the inside, threatening to spill over in words and violence.

“I bared my soul to you! That evening, I—” He swallowed the anguish that tried to come out as a sob. What was this pain? “I told you shit I haven’t told anyone.
